Hyderabad: A little bit of activity on the ground will help the stars smile down at you! All you have to do is plant a sapling of a tree from among some pre-determined species, each of which is believed to be associated with traditional moon signs and the stars associated with each of them.
And if you do not have the requisite know-how of the realm that links trees and what the stars foretell, then fear not. There is expert advice on `astrophytology' from chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who is known for the depth of his knowledge on matters astrological. According to him, traditional wisdom talks about specific plant species that bring good luck to those who plant them. Taking this in view, the Telangana chief minister has received details on the subject from several astrologers and passed these on the state forest department to encourage people to plant trees.
Chandrasekhar Rao's idea came at a meeting held to discuss the preparations for the Haritha Haram programme in July. The Telangana government has set itself a very ambitious target of planting a whopping 46 crore saplings. This works out to about 13 saplings per person in the state, which has a population of about 3.5 crore.
The government, Chandrasekhar Rao said, was determined to bring 33% of state land area under tree cover and called on people from all walks of life to join in planting trees all over the state.

Going with the belief that any reason that makes someone plant a tree is worth the cause, the chief minister also instructed the forest department to ensure that plants of a particular species, sought by people based on their birth signs or birth stars, be provided to them.
"It has been a long-standing tradition in India to plant trees based on a person's astrological sign or birth star. Since saplings of many tree species will be given to the people during Haritha Haram, saplings that are aligned astrologically to individuals must also be given if asked for," Chandrasekhar Rao said
